Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage (PRF) Insurance

The 2025 Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage signups are just around the corner!
What is Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage, more commonly known as PRF? PRF is a rainfall insurance policy offered by Producer Ag for farmers and ranchers who rely on pasture, rangeland, or forage for haying and grazing. It offers coverage for a lack of rainfall in your grid during a specific time interval. This policy allows you to buy insurance protection for losses of forage produced for grazing or harvested for hay, resulting in increased costs for managing your livestock operation.
How can PRF add value to your operation?
PRF indemnifies the insured if a grid’s accumulated rainfall index is below the insured’s coverage level for their chosen intervals. The PRF policy uses the data from each grid to determine indemnities rather than that of individual farms or ranches or specific weather stations in the general area. Both grazing land and hay land utilized for forage production may be insured. This coverage is offered for landlords and tenants, as well as owners/operators. The insured must also have an interest in livestock. Coverage is based on a producer’s selected coverage level, index intervals, and productivity factors. The index interval represents a two-month period. The period selected should be the one when precipitation is most important to a producer’s operation. Policyholders can select a coverage level from 70 to 90 percent. The rainfall index does not measure direct production or loss. The producer is insuring a rainfall index that is expected to estimate the production of the acreage you plan to insure.

Several choices must be made when insuring your grazing or haying production, including coverage level, index intervals, irrigated practice, productivity factor, and number of acres. Your Producer Ag insurance agent can help you identify index grids for your area. They also will assist in assigning acreage to one or more grids based on the location and use of PRF.
